On the republication of this early work, Dr. Clarke writes: "These poems reflect my early beginnings as a social thinker and as a young man, straight out of the south during my early years in Harlem, reflecting on the African condition and the awareness learned from associating with a diversity of politically-left movements and the revival of the Garvey Movement during the Italian-Ethiopian War, 1930-1936."
